How to Spend a Day in Coney Island, NYC

1. Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs

Did you know that Coney Island is often called the birthplace of the hot dog? Nathan’s Hot Dogs began way back in 1916 when Polish immigrant Nathan Handwerker opened a small hot dog stand that drew big crowds and big names. (Al Capone, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and the King and Queen of England, just to name a few!) Today, Nathan’s is known for its signature frankfurter and the famous international hot dog eating contest.

2. New York Aquarium

Located on the Coney Island Boardwalk, the New York Aquarium is the oldest continually operating aquarium in the United States. It was originally established in 1896 and is home to hundreds of species of aquatic wildlife, including sharks and rays, walruses, sea lions, and fish. Guests can tour the exhibits, watch 4-D films in the aquarium theater, or get up-close and personal with the animals during feedings.

3. Coney Island Beach, NYC

Coney Island beach is ideal for a summertime getaway. Feel free to sunbathe on nearly three miles of sandy shoreline, or enjoy a friendly game of volleyball, handball, or basketball. The beach also boasts a historic 2.5-mile boardwalk with bumper cars, an arcade, and two amusement parks. Don’t miss the spectacular fireworks display every Friday night at 9:30 p.m.!

4. Coney Island Museum

With artifacts that celebrate the beach’s rich history and culture, a trip to the Coney Island Museum will give you a glimpse into the past.
