History of the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights

Dyker Heights is a quiet Italian community that features some of the most charming and historic houses in the area. The neighborhood’s holiday lights extravaganza started in 1986, when a resident on 84th Street began decorating her house with lights and displays. Over the years, the holiday decorating bug spread and neighbors began engaging in friendly competition to see if one could out-decorate the other. Today, over 100,000 people visit Dyker Heights during the holidays to enjoy the breathtaking displays.

How to Experience the Lights

Although some homeowners have their lights up the weekend after Thanksgiving, the best time to see the Dyker Heights Christmas lights is in mid-December or later. We also suggest visiting on a weekend between 5 and 9 p.m. Be sure to look for the Spata house with Santa outside and the Polizzotto house with 29-foot motorized wooden soldiers. They were among the first families to begin the tradition of elaborate Christmas decorations in the 1980’s.

The best lights are located about a mile from the subway station. You’ll be in for at least a 20-minute walk, so be prepared and dress warmly. You can also take a taxi cab or Uber into the Dyker Heights neighborhood. Don’t forget to bring a map!

Take a Bus Tour

Not up to walking in the cold? Guests can admire the spectacular beauty of the Dyker Heights Christmas lights from the comfort of a heated bus! A Slice of Brooklyn Bus Tours offers guided rides through the neighborhood every night in December, except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. You’ll love the multimedia presentation which includes vintage Christmas variety specials starring Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and more. Tours start in Union Square in Manhattan and last approximately 3.5 hours. Be sure to secure your seat in advance!
