No Brooklyn vacation is complete without a visit to Grand Army Plaza! This famous public park was designed in 1867 and offers fun annual events and beautiful landmarks. Visit the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Arch, enjoy food shopping at the farmer’s market, or watch a dazzling fireworks display on New Year’s Eve. Whatever you choose, a trip to Grand Army Plaza will be one you’ll never forget. Here are some of our favorite things to do and see there.
How to Spend a Day at Grand Army Plaza
1. Visit the Grand Army Plaza Memorial Arch
Often referred to as Brooklyn’s Arc De Triomphe, the Grand Army Plaza Memorial Arch is the heart of the park. This famous landmark was constructed in 1892 and is a tribute to those who defended the Union in the Civil War. It was formerly known as the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ arch and is topped by a sculpture of soldiers and a chariot. There’s an observation deck that’s open to the public, and the interior of the arch is sometimes open for art shows and performances.
2. Shop at the Greenmarket
The Greenmarket at Grand Army Plaza was established in 1989 as Brooklyn’s flagship farmer’s market. It’s held near the base of the Memorial Arch every Saturday from February through December. The market features farm fresh produce, baked goods, local wine and beer, and much more.
3. Dine at the Food Truck Rally
Visitors can try cuisine from all over New York City during the Food Truck Rally at Grand Army Plaza. Held on several Sundays each summer, this event brings the area’s best food trucks right to Park Slope. Be sure to come hungry – you’ll find everything from Italian ice and donuts to tacos and Philly cheesesteaks. Yum!
4. Check Out the Bailey Fountain
The Bailey Fountain is named after Brooklyn-based financier and philanthropist Frank Bailey. This elaborate sculpture in Grand Army Plaza features two standing figures on a pedestal, with three reclining figures in the fountain’s basin. Rehabilitated in 1956 and again in 2005, the Bailey Fountain is a popular gathering spot and backdrop for wedding photos.
5. Enjoy New Year’s Eve Fireworks
Ring in the New Year with a celebration at Grand Army Plaza! Guests can enjoy live music, sip on delicious hot chocolate, and admire a spectacular fireworks display at midnight. The best places for viewing are along Prospect Park’s West Drive and between Grand Army Plaza and 9th Street.
