Drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators each year, the Coney Island Mermaid Parade is an iconic event that celebrates the start of summer in Coney Island, New York. Founded in 1983, it is now the largest art parade in the country and showcases the creative talents of over 3,000 New York artists from all five boroughs. Featuring everything from decorated motorized floats and antique cars to participants dressed in handmade costumes, this fun and whimsical event is a must-see on Saturday, June 18th – and it’s all just a short drive from At Home In Brooklyn! Here’s what you can expect to find at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade.
Spend a Day at the 2016 Coney Island Mermaid Parade
Bringing mythology to life for local residents (especially those who live on streets named Mermaid and Neptune!), the parade strives to give creative New Yorkers an outlet express themselves. At 1 PM, the parade will kick off at West 21st Street and Surf Avenue before rolling east to West 10th Street. Once there, it will turn south towards the famous Coney Island boardwalk, where the marchers and pull-off floats will turn towards West 17th Street. At Steeplechase Plaza, the parade will disband, leaving behind a trail of glitter and a rainbow of color. To ensure that you have a good viewing spot, try to arrive before 11 AM!
The Mermaid Pilsner
After the festivities, don’t forget to stop by Coney Island Brewing Company for a taste of their classic Mermaid Pilsner! This unique light-bodied brew features mild spice flavors, nice hops, and a balance of light and fruity floral aromas for the perfect ending to a wonderful day at the parade. The brewery also offers a MerMan Imperial Pilsner, which is a medium-bodied pilsner that boasts a piney hop bitterness and a crisp, clean taste. Cheers!
Other Great Things to Do in Coney Island
Aside from the parade, Coney Island, NYC, offers a multitude of events and attractions all summer long. Guests can enjoy a spectacular fireworks show at 9:30 PM every Friday night, visit the renowned Coney Island Circus Sideshow each weekend, and even admire a wide variety of magic acts that are fun for the whole family. Be sure to spend some time on the 1923 boardwalk, which is home to the New York Aquarium, Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, and over 50 historic rides and attractions.
